My friends Carrie and Shane throw the kind of parties people actually want to go to. Carrie’s favorite holiday is Halloween, so as you might imagine, she knows how to do dressing up and decorating to the nines. And Shane is a fantastic cook, so the two of them together are a party-planning dream team. Which is why, when Carrie contacted me a few months ago about shooting their daughter Harper’s birthday party, which was to be an Alice in Wonderland theme, I was SO excited! They are also big Tim Burton fans, so with the recent release of his version of the story, the timing was perfect. They put so much thought into all the details, and everything came together perfectly. And of course, Harper, the little girl I’ve babysat, photographed like crazy, and watched grow up so much over the past two years, was the star of the show. But you’ll see…
First up, all of the fantastic details. All of the treats and sweets were made by the ridiculously talented and creative and super sweet Heather Baird of SprinkleBakes, who is a longtime friend of Carrie’s and who has become a recent friend of mine since last fall, when she hired me to shoot her goodies. Her work is just so stunning, you almost don’t even want to eat it. But then you do, and you find out it tastes just as good as it looks. Below, the mouse and the caterpillar were made out of fondant, and those mushrooms are actually cookies, if you can believe it. So realistic! She made the Mad Hatter lollipops out of fondant-covered marshmallows, I believe. Swooooon! (You can read more from her point of view HERE on her blog.)
And the piece de resistance? These Queen of Hearts cookies. Everyone oohed and ahhed like crazy over these. Heather’s attention to detail is mind-blowing.
And then the birthday girl woke up from her nap just in time for the party to start!
How STINKIN’ precious is she?! I just adore how expressive she is, and how she has had the same facial expressions pretty much since birth. If I could guarantee my child would be as cute as she is, I might just go out and have one tomorrow. :)
And here’s River! She reminds me of my own Gretchen. I wish we lived close enough for them to be play buddies!
Carrie and Shane rented this giant caterpillar thingy, but Harper was terrified of it! Good thing the other “kids” at the party had some fun with it. :)
Sarah and Crystal dressed up as Tweedledee and Tweedledum. I LOVE it!
Cake time! Another of Heather’s fabulous creations.
I love Carrie dressed as the Queen of Hearts! And Harper’s Alice dress is so adorable… Carrie had it made by a girl on Etsy. (Is that place a gold mine or WHAT?)
Lyndsay, aka Lady Gow Gow, aka the White Rabbit.
All the girls!
Carrie’s cousin Katie (bottom left) came as the White Queen. Love it!
“Harper, Alex, SMILE for the camera!” (I almost pee myself laughing every time I look at this.)
And finally, some Bull family portraits! (Check out their session I posted almost exactly one year ago… They were my first family session and my first post on this blog! Crazy how much can happen– and how much a certain girl named Harper can grow– in just a year.)
Happy birthday, Harper! Aunt Morgan loves you! :)
And now, for some slideshow goodness. I loved this song “Welcome to Mystery” by the Plain White T’s that was on the latest Alice in Wonderland Soundtrack. Hope you guys enjoy!
